Rafael Nadal to Kickstart Clay Season at Barcelona Open
Return to the Dirt for the King of Clay
Faces Italian Qualifier Cobolli in First Round
Rafael Nadal, the undisputed King of Clay, is set to make his eagerly anticipated return to the red dirt at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on Monday. The 12-time champion will open his campaign against Italian qualifier Flavio Cobolli.
Nadal's last tournament appearance was at the Australian Open in January, where he suffered a heartbreaking loss to Mackenzie McDonald in the second round. Since then, the Spaniard has been battling a recurring foot injury. However, he has been gradually building up his fitness and is finally ready to hit the clay again.
The Barcelona Open is a tournament that holds special significance for Nadal. He has won it a record 12 times, including an incredible run of five consecutive titles from 2011 to 2015. The Spaniard will be looking to add to his tally this year and cement his status as the greatest clay-court player of all time.
Cobolli, ranked 153rd in the world, will be a tough first-round opponent for Nadal. The Italian has been in impressive form this season, reaching the semifinals of the Challenger tournament in Lisbon last week. However, Nadal will be confident of victory if he can stay injury-free.
If Nadal progresses to the second round, he could potentially face British rising star Jack Draper, who received a wild card into the tournament. Draper has been in excellent form this season, reaching the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells Masters and the fourth round of the Miami Open.
The Barcelona Open will be a key test for Nadal as he prepares for the French Open, which begins on May 28th. The Spaniard will be hoping to win his 15th Grand Slam title on the red dirt in Paris and cement his legacy as the greatest player of all time.
