Queen Elizabeth II's Final Engagement: Appointing Liz Truss as Prime Minister
Inside the Moment the Monarch Met with the New Leader
Liz Truss Recalls her "Why Me, Why Now?" Reaction
The late Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, died on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96. Just two days prior, on September 6, she met with Liz Truss at Balmoral to appoint her as the new Prime Minister.
In an interview after the Queen's passing, Truss revealed her initial reaction to the news. "I was in a state of shock," she said. "I thought, 'Why me, why now?'"
Truss, who had only been Foreign Secretary for two months, was the 15th Prime Minister appointed by Queen Elizabeth II. The meeting at Balmoral was the Queen's final official engagement.
The Queen had been suffering from mobility issues in recent months and had been spending more time at Balmoral, her summer residence in Scotland. The appointment of Truss was a significant event, as it marked the first time the Queen had appointed a Prime Minister outside of Buckingham Palace.
The meeting was brief, lasting only about 30 minutes. Truss said she was "deeply honored" to have been chosen by the Queen. "She was incredibly gracious and welcoming," Truss recalled. "She gave me her full support and wished me well."
The Queen's death has sparked a wave of mourning across the UK and the world. Truss has pledged to continue the Queen's legacy of service and dedication.
